Post-breeding Hummingbird Distribution
in the United States

Maps show out of range birds after July 1
and birds wintering within their breeding or migratory range during December & January

UPDATE: August 1, 2005 -- Because of a host of factors that competed (and continue to compete) for my time, the maps for the last half of winter 04/05 were incomplete. They will likely continue to remain that way. What's worse -- we have moved to Alaska (THAT's not worse, believe me!), and frankly I have very little time to devote to the maps this winter, too (THAT's what's worse). In an effort to salvage something on this website, I've decided to focus on the easiest species to map -- the rarest ones. So detailed Rufous Hummingbird maps for winter 05/06 will be left out; We're getting over 1000 reports for that species each winter season, and I won't have the time to process them all this year. There's a chance I could produce occurrence maps by town alone without detailed accompanying yard lists, etc., for Rufous, but we'll see how the season progresses. Keep the reports of other rare species coming, however, and I'll do my best to see that THOSE maps, at least, are updated!
THANKS.

A SPECIAL NOTE: Many of the birds tallied on the species maps below have been documented by federally licensed hummingbird banders at the invitation of homeowners like you. The information that can be gathered by banders is not only interesting, it is vital to our understanding of these "vagrant" hummingbirds that spend the winter in areas we previously considered inhospitable. You can do your part by inviting a hummingbird bander licensed in your state to visit your house to capture, band, measure, and release unharmed your winter hummingbird. I encourage you to click the "YES Banding" link for your state on the Rufous Hummingbird map page, and send an auto-addressed email alerting the appropriate banders to your interest. Of course if you prefer not to have your bird banded, all you have to do is say "no, thank-you" -- we clearly respect that. Either way, your report is very valuable, so at least send an email to Stacy Jon Peterson, web page compiler, so we can include the report on our database and maps. Thank you very much!
